New Years Eve

Dear friends,

Hey front Range folks: Leaving New Years Eve plans to the last minute? Consider this - I will be at the Outlook Hotel With Lionel Young, Chris Harris, Tony Black... and special guest Johnny Long.

For those who don't know, John is a very old friend and real deal blues man. Grew up in E St Louis and flourished under the wing of Homesick James in Chicago. They don't get any better than Johnny. He lived in Denver for many years and I played with him alot in the day... in fact that's where I first met Lionel.

So drop those uninspired plans and come on down. We will start early and finish late (something for everyone!) with lots of time to chat and catch up between sets.

2014 looks exciting already. Dexter Payne Quintet has a CD release scheduled for Feb 13, with all new website, bandcamp downloads, possible travel plans on several fronts. Marrakech Express continues to sell out shows, and there are other musical horizons popping up.

Have the best possible New Years Eve, and stay tuned for all the fun to come! I am plotting a way to materially express the gratitude I feel towards all of you for your wonderful support. Thanks for befriending my music!

Best,
Dexter

Just around the corner

Dear friends,

Here it is, the end of the year! Seems only yesterday I had mis-calculated and discovered I had an extra week before Christmas. Did that ever disappear fast!

Still not enough hours in the day... even for just the things I WANT to do! Have I enrolled you in my campaign for the 28 hour day? 8 hours to sleep - and 20 to get it all done! Eliminate Mondays. I'm completely sold on the idea, but somehow... It doesn't seem to be gaining much traction!

Too bad, cuz I am sure all the extra time would serve me well in getting the final work done on my new album (DPQ, due out in Feb!) and making exciting music and travel plans for the coming year.

Meanwhile, in the 24 hour world, squeezed in between lots of Christmas cheer, extensive resolution writing, early spring cleaning and walkin in a winter wonderland, I have a few fun things to share this week:

TUES  Dec 24, 7pm Divine Science Church (14th & Williams, Den)
Duo with Michael Stanwood (one song in a musical evening, it's a tradition!)

THUR  Dec 26, 7pm  Caffe Sole (Table Mesa Shopping Ctr, Bldr) Facebook Event
Marrakech Express Holiday Special: the usual stellar quartet - El Yesfi Samir (oud, guit, vocal), Anthony Salvo (vln), Brett Bowen (perc), moi (clarinet). This week we have a special treat, we will be joined by James Hoskins (Sherefe, Crane Wife, Cameron Powers Project, County Road X, etc.) on cello.
https://www.facebook.com/events/255955244553832/

FRI  Dec 27, 8:30pm Oskar Blues (Lyons)
Lionel Young Band

SAT  Dec 28,  7:30pm  Nissi's (287 & Arapahoe Rd, Lafayette)
Lionel Young Band

If you make it to all of these, you definitely get a gold star!
So, Ill see you there, right?

All the best for the rest, and then the one to come!
Merry Christmas, Happy Solstice
and dont forget to have some fun,
Dexter

Winter approaches

Dear friends,

Cant wait for winter. Wish it would wait just a little longer. Which will it be? Do our wishes affect the weather we get? These, and some other questions will not be fully answered in this email. Stay tuned for updates on the universe and other matters.

I have sad to share: my dear friend of 15 wonderful years, my Brazilian "elder brother", Gaudencio Thiago de Mello left us a week ago after a year of declining health. We met on the Rio Solimoes ("Amazon") at the "encotra das aguas" in 1998. Thiago, 80, was the brother of renowned poet Amadeu Thiago de Mello. Best known for his grammy nominated recording "Journey to the Amazon" with Sharon Isbin & Paul Winter including 5 of his compositions, Thiago featured me in several concerts in NY with his 9 piece band Amazon, and with Sharon Isbin at Hampton Music festival and 92nd St "Y". We recorded 4 albums in close collaboration in Brazil and NYC and I played on 2 more of his CDs. We toured together in Brazil in 2006, where we played with Sharon Isbin, as well as Antonio Mello. You can see promo video of Thiago for his Warner Bros. release with Isbin & Winter at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_A9h4c8kDso The music lives on, but we will miss you dear brother!

Dear friends,

I have been slow at communicating. Blame it on the flood, though I am one of the lucky ones who still have a home, high and dry. Be that as it may, I am letting you know at the last minute -

I will be at Caffe Sole Saturday, Sept 28 (thats today!) playing with Nokuthula, marimba and mbira-based group: Andre Mallinger, John Leventhal, Barb Kulton, Karna Knapp, Matt Tucker. Playing music rooted in Zimbabwe and South Africa, it's bound to be a fun night of dancing and listening in the best club in town.

2nd Wed & Thur

Dear friends,

Just finished an amazing week of great musical experience with wonderful friends and I feel so busy preparing for the coming weeks adventures that i am not sure there is really time for sleep and other details. Familiar feelings, almost perpetual, that make me realize I'm a lucky so-and-so. I feel most blessed when dear friends come to share music that gives me such joy - thank you!

This week is special. Midday Music Meditation is a wonderful opportunity for us to gather and do (almost) nothing together. Commemorate the day with us, without a word - we could use a lot fewer words and  more nothing these days!

And when it rains... Yes, Second Thursday is here! Dexter Payne Quartet is in a growth phase with new tunes in the mix, and a new CD of classics almost done. A dear friend and supporter has informed me that this week's gig will be the site of a Brazilian birthday party, so don't miss out!
