Christmas Time is Here

Trying to figure out the easy way to post here! No one said it was easy...

Great response from varied sources so far on the Judy Roderick with special guest Mac Rebennack CD (see WHEN IM GONE at www.dexofon.com). Noted by Brazilian producer Arnaldo DeSouteiro here:
http://jazzstation-oblogdearnaldodesouteiros.blogspot.com/2008/12/cd-of-day-judy-roderick-when-im-gone.html

A sad note - Bill Ashford, Judy's husband and collaborator 1967-75, died as the CD was being released. No one looked for its release more enthusiastically that the former underground free form dj, co-writer on many songs of Judy's.

You can listen to Washboard Chaz Leary (featured in playingforchange.com video) talk about it on WWOZ (New Orleans) with Jamie Dell'apo as well as hear a couple tracks in the first 20 minutes of this archive: http://www.virb.com/2681578360504589/
And more airplay in Colo, MT, Boston... where else?

Happy Holidays! The Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts, a 501(c)(3) non-profit jazz education program for teenagers, has a perfect way for you to get a unique holiday gift for someone (or for yourselfJ) while supporting a great cause…the future of jazz!
“Cookin’ with the CCJA” is our new, hot-off-the-press, cookbook.

This doesn’t exactly sound like a typical “jazz” endeavor, but we’ve made it as jazzy as possible! The book features food recipes from local jazz musicians and members of the Denver jazz community, as well as some CCJA alumni, faculty, and board members. In addition, each of the contributors has given their “recipe for success,” which is words of wisdom and advice for music, life, or both. As a special addition, we also have such words of wisdom from internationally acclaimed musicians, just for this book, such as Lewis Nash, Arturo Sandoval, John Clayton, Maria Schneider, Michel Camilo, Gordon Goodwin, Patti Austin, Sean Jones, Tom Harrell, and more. These recipes for success are truly inspiring! The book also has great photos throughout, and 37 delicious, unique recipes, many of which have been handed down through families for generations. Some of them have actually been created just for this book, by musicians who like to improvise in the kitchen as well. We’ve been trying them at home, and they are fantastic!

Please go to (www.jazzarts.org ) and find an order form with more information, including how to order it online or through the mail. Please consider purchasing one as a gift or for yourself, and help us keep the jazz alive for kids. Proceeds will benefit our youth programs, as well as help provide scholarships for deserving students. Feel free to
pass this on to others who might be interested in supporting the cause as well!

Wishing you the best in 2009!

Concert Dec 10

Today Im honored to play a concert for the 60th anniversary of:
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights!

The event at 7:30 includes speakers and
THIAGO DE MELLO & AMAZON featuring ITHAMARA KOORAX
at CUNY Graduate Center, 365 5th Ave, NY,NY

Have you read it? I never did... and it was signed in 1948. Definitely worth reading!

http://www.un.org/Overview/rights.html

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Adopted and proclaimed by General Assembly resolution 217 A (III) of 10 December 1948

On December 10, 1948 the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights the full text of which appears in the following pages. Following this historic act the Assembly called upon all Member countries to publicize the text of the Declaration and "to cause it to be disseminated, displayed, read and expounded principally in schools and other educational institutions, without distinction based on the political status of countries or territories."

PREAMBLE

Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,

Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people,

Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law,

Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between nations,

Whereas the peoples of the United Nations have in the Charter reaffirmed their faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person and in the equal rights of men and women and have determined to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,

Whereas Member States have pledged themselves to achieve, in co-operation with the United Nations, the promotion of universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms,

Whereas a common understanding of these rights and freedoms is of the greatest importance for the full realization of this pledge,

Now, Therefore THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY proclaims THIS UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction.

Halloween fun

FRI 9pm Mary Russell Band @ Gold Hill Inn - Its Haloween - if you dont want to have fun, skip this one! (with Rob Candler, Bill Brennen)

Nov 1 & 2 are the Days of the Dead, when a whole lot of people in Latin America (Mexico especially) head for the cemetary with food, drink and guitars to spend a little time with their deceased relatives. So lets sing a song for those who have left, and for those who are left.

WED Nov 5th 7-9pm Laurie Dameron CD Release @ Dazzle (9th&Lincoln, Den)

Laurie Dameron is a well kept secret: singer, writer and a good guitarist who moves easily between jazz, blues and more. Check her out on myspace and CD Baby, request her on KUVO, and then make a reservation for a good show at Dazzle Wed evening.

Heads up on a new Dexter Payne page at reverbnation.com/dexterpayne !!!
Its getting to be widget city out there on the info hiway, so watch where you step...

I dont usually talk about studio work - so many things can happen between a session and a CD - and its really someone elses business, Im just a hired hand. But rules are for breaking - right? I had the best time yesterday working with Brian Mullens and Andy McEwen. It was partly the inspired music, part inspiring setting, part great company, but at the bottom of it all... I LOVE playing the bass clarinet! No pun intended.

As long as Im out on a limb, might as well bounce a little: It doesnt really matter who you support or what you believe in, (or dont, as the case may be) prayer and voting have been proven conclusively to be very effective. I suggest we all need to do both in the next six days!!!

this weekend with Salem & Playback Theater

Weekend update:

Two dates added, both with Todd Johnson & his band, Salem:
I will join them for Fri night Oct 24) at the Winter Park Pub. (Yes, thats in Winter Park, CO!) And then again on Sun (Oct 26) at the Mountain Sun (Boulder, CO) featuring original music from the newly released CD. (Go to www.salem-music.com)

Just a note about Sat night (Oct 25) with Playback Theater West (Dairy Center for the Arts, Boulder, CO):
This is an amazing group of very talented people, who I have the privilege of playing with a few times each year. Playback is a theater form in which the actors "playback" or improvise (and embellish!) real life stories from the audience. They are SO good, and I get to provide an on-the-spot soundtrack. Improvised music and sound effects, high art! Definitely high fun - the hilarity and pathos they evoke is astounding!

CONCERT REVIEW
Kailin Yong Solo Debut Daniel Pearl World Music Days Concert - They were two very special nights! "Music has the power to reach across boundaries, spreading joy and understanding like nothing else can." Fiddler for peace Kailin Yong's solo debut album Bowing with the Flow was a fantastic evening of original music featuring many talented artists sharing their experiences, art, dance, and poetry toward a musical mission of peace on Sept 11 in Broomfield and October 3rd at Swallow Hill, with the special addition of Souhail Kaspar.

My special thanks to Kailin and all the great musicians involved:
Rudolfo Betancourt - acoustic guitar, Brett Bowen - darbuka, riq, percussion, Mike Fitzmaurice - upright bass, Chakib Hilali - ney flute, Kylie Hilali - qanun, Souhail Kaspar - Arabic percussion,
Jesse Manno - drum kit, davul, percussion, Scott McCormick - accordian, piano, Cameron Powers - oud, Kailin Yong - violin

BULLETIN:
Dexter is Afro-Pop Ensemble Instructor at Naropa University beginning Jan 2009. Get in touch, Naropa students and lets create a great ensemble!

The BIG SKY MUDFLAPS, with the help of Hugh McCarten and Wendy and Kate Cordtz, reunited in NYC Aug 30, at JUDSON MEMORIAL CHURCH, 55 Washington Sq. South, NYC, to celebrate the life of Richard Wendell Cordtz. What a night, rich with performance by many friends, heartfelt words, perfect silence - and complete with rare video of Wendell performing as well as a memorable bagpipe performance - of Diamonds Are a Girls Best Friend!

2008 Started with a wild ski tour - playing outdoors for the X Games in Aspen and warming up for De La Soul. Continuing with Jazzoula Fest in Missoula, MT and total inspiration by Buddy DeFranco, Phil Woods, Bucky Pizzarelli, John Allred.

I will continue to send out emails to friends on my list, but this seems like a much better way to be letting people know where to find me on a given day/night. Heres hoping it works that way!

Please, if you see this let me know, give me feedback and help eradicate ignorance (mine!)

Best,
Dexter
