I am not really up on where he came from, but tomorrow is his day. I will be playing with a fresh collection of folks, playing bossa nova and other Brazilian treats for a Valentine's Day salon: "the Brazilian Art of Love and Chocolate" presented by "Cafe de la Culture". Previous salons with themes like Rumi, Leonardo DaVinci, Jane Austen, have been popular. Combining fine food, music, Brazilian romantic poetry, and conversation in an intimate setting in a lovely North Boulder home, it is a good one for couples and singles too. RSVP at:

Then I am off for Carnaval weekend to tropical MT, celebrating the sweetness of life with my old pals, the Big Sky Mudflaps. Friends are gathering from all over the country for the party, should be a good one Sun night in Hamilton, MT.

Hi everyone,

Winter in Colorado (today at least!) is looking pretty post card-ish. Good time for a walk in the snow... at the very least. My music season is picking up slow - last year's blistering pace will be hard to match though it appears that it will pick up momentum soon.

Right now I am enjoying teaching Afropop Ensemble (my fourth year as adjunct!) This time it's a team effort with percussionist Scott Mast. Scott, a Naropa grad, brings a lot to the effort and it is an even richer experience - that's saying a lot! Music is a community experience.

A few great gigs coming up I want you to know about: First, tomorrow, Sat, Feb 4th, is one of my precious dates with Playback Theater West at the Dairy. Don't miss it, especially if you haver never see Playback. A group of very talented and conscious actors spontaneously play back stories told by audience volunteers... and I play the sound track. Every time I laugh, I cry.

Wed, the 8th is the bi-monthly Morning Music Meditation at Boulder Library on Canyon. Its a rotating cast of great musicians playing contemplative sounds for your enjoyment. Always makes me feel wonderful - come try it for yourself.

Thursday is that favorite day of the month: Second Thursday at Caffe Sole with the Dexter Payne Quartet. It is a great joy for me to swim in the Brazilian tradition with Bill Kopper, Dave Willey and Raoul Rossiter. Starting my 7th year with Bill and Raoul, and Dave is a brilliant musical intuitive who might have actually been the first accordionist in Brazil.

Then on the weekend I am off to Rapid City for the first forray of the year with Lionel Young Band. Come on along, only a day's drive!

Finally beginning to feel like I'm home, recharging batteries in this dark time of year and reconnecting with people who are very special to me. I've had the chance to show a few of my homies the great band I toured with nearly all last year - very gratifying. Stay tuned for more dates with the Lionel Young Band.

Of course you can't have it all - and one thing I missed out there was playing Brazilian music. I do that primarily with three wonderful guys who also happen to be really talented. Come out and join us at Caffe Sole Thursday. Dance, listen, laugh, eat, drink... all kinds of fun!

Another favorite convocation is the Wednesday morning music meditation at Boulder Library twice a month. Don't just do something... sit there!

Back from Istanbul

Dear Friends,

As if a summer of touring the US and Canada was not enough (NY, Toronto, Montreal, Chicago, SF, LA - all in one season!) I am amazed and humbled by it all!

It was hard to leave Turkey, what an amazing place! My top priority was studying with Turkish clarinet Serkan Çagri, a great human being and extremely talented. While there I met classical clarinet star Boja Kragulj, who, in between worldwide symphony appearances, is studying with Serkan on a Fulbright Scholarship. Met lots of great people there, some fine musicians, and I am definitely looking forward to my next visit to the really unique artistic scene in the ancient city of Istanbul.

Had a wonderful time in Paris with the Lionel Young Band (which really tore it up - four nights of capacity crowds at le Meridien Etoile Jazz Club). Yes, I could go there again, too! Meanwhile, I am writing you from NY, where I am recording for my dear friend, Thiago de Mello...

Will be home in time to do my favorite gig: Second Thursday at Caffe Sole. This month the quartet will feature Francisco Marques along with the amazing Dave Willey and dynamo Raoul Rossiter. Guaranteed fun for dancers and listeners!

Then I am off to Austin for a week of gigs with a variety of music, most notably two nights at the Elephant Room with my dear old friend, the amazing Stanley Smith.

Last minute, I know: In an hour or so Ill be on the air at KUVO, community jazz radio 89.3 FM in Denver. Celebrating their fund drive, KUVO is interviewing a few people from the local music community. Im honored to be included today, Friday, Sept 30 at 1pm!

Tonight a last minute call to play some New Orleans traditional clarinet for a dinner at Primrose Early Education in Thornton.

Saturday, I am honored to play for the CD release by Harry Tuft, founder of Denver Folklore Center, where I first bought a harmonica. A number of us who recorded on Harry's new CD will perform with him at Swallow Hill Music. 8pm Sat. Mollie O'Brien, Rich Moore, Carla Sciaky, Ernie Martinez, Liz Masterson, Greg Garrison, Dexter Payne, David Metsch, Mag Hayden, and Grubstake.

Then next week I am off again with the Lionel Young Band, this time to King Biscuit Blues festival in Helena, AR and a weekend in Topeka, KS.

Dear friends,

Finally, faces I know ... friends I've missed! There are a lot of things to miss when you spend a season on the move ( the Lionel Young Band logged over 35000 miles this summer!) but the thing I missed most was my community here at home. No amount of enthusiastic new audiences, or even old friends from the past, can replace you!

Telluride Blues was a blast - once we got past the cold rain turning to snow as we played, and it finished with a packed evening show at the Telluride Elks Lodge (yes, indoors!) Please come out and catch the remaining front range shows with this great band, before we head to King Biscuit Fest (10/6), the Blues Cruise (10/23-29) and Paris (11/9-16)! Yep, that's in France, not TN! Also, I have the chance to reunite with a few of my CO musical friends. Come on, don't miss it!

Tour begins

Yes, the real tour begins! I am listing below the summer with Lionel Young Band, as it currently stands. We have had some great experiences already - more to come! Please tell your sister in Gahana and your cousin in Woodstock to come out and see us - it is a really great band!

They should double check the date with the venue before driving a long way and please make sure they come up and introduce themselves! Just Sat we drove into KC, MO thinking we were playing a whole night there, only to find we were an opening act! Oh, and you can tell my friends, too!

Hi friends,

Lionel Young Band just back from Charleston, WV - what a haul! Worst mishap was a flat tire. This band is musically a lot of fun - we made a good showing there (see comments: www.lionelyoung.net). Saw a lot of the Ohio River, some really green trees, and a bunch of blues fans. Oh yeah, there were a few vintage cars in our hotel parking lot, too. Meanwhile, tonight's show features, not only the fabulous Gora Gora, but also Mark Harris' innovative school improvisation project. In spite of our confusion about what season it really is, spring marches forward, trees bloom, seeds sprout (if we remember to plant!) and summer approaches. Fast!

The students/members of Naropa Afropop Ensemble rose to the occasion and gave spirited performances at the Laughing Goat and at the Music Dept concert. Two of them are in bands with record contracts! More importantly, I was impressed with their social maturity: the way they self-organized and looked out for each other - a great crew. Gives me hope for the new generation! As in the past, I am certain that I learned more than anyone in the class, musically and otherwise and for that I am grateful.

The Kailin Yong Peace Project album is really taking shape at Immersive Studio. Breathtaking, expansive, descriptions are hard to find. The Peace Project will play at Dazzle in Denver at 7pm, Tues, May 31, and with luck we will have a limited EP release for the show. Make your reservations now!

Additionally, plans for the Lionel Young Band 2011 tour are shaping up. We will be playing in NYC, Chicago & San Francisco in the coming months, and quite a few places in between. The schedule, ever shifting, is viewable at www.lionelyoung.net and I will send it to this list as well. Trying to get my national list back together, as I have never transferred it to the new list-server.

Meanwhile, I discovered that my monthly date 7:30 Thur, May 12 at Caffe Sole lacked a band - lots of busy schedules. SO, at the last minute a fun night is coming together with Jake Schepps, a banjo player I have admired for some time, ever since I heard a lovely tone poem he wrote at a workshop in Banff, Alberta for banjo and trumpet. Turns out he has caught the choro virus... and he lives only a block away! Plus a great mandolin player, Dave Goldenberg & sambista Carl Dixon. OK, you have all the chatter now. Dear friends,

March has pretty well blown us away this year. Everyone, in every way. All the more reason to sing and dance. A lovely equinox, great full moon. Lives ending and beginning. Amazing accounts of community in the face of devastation. We will only get through together - Celebrate the awesome energy of spring!

Winter recording projects are maturing. Gora Gora will be in the studio soon. Kailin Yong Peace Project is entering into the second phase of recording and I am very excited about the results! Lionel Young Band album is for sale and George Inai Curious Ghost part 1 is about to hit CD Baby.

Meanwhile out in the air, Naropa Afropop Ensemble will soon give it's first public performance. Stay tuned for a rare appearance of Veelah Hot Balkan Ensemble. Gora Gora will perform in Denver soon. Plans are well underway for coast-to-coast tours of the Lionel Young Band. Join in offering up some vibrations that are not of an explosive nature. We definitely have variety, no problem there!

Stirring up the cauldron

Groundhogs, warm sun, it's all very seductive. Drought, war, peace, government, gas - very scary. There, that covers it right? Fortunately we have lots to discuss on the musical front. Ah, I feel better already!

The reality of Lionel Young Band winning the IBC is just beginning to sink in. Plans for summer are starting to unfold, website is up (www.lionelyoung.net) though still a work in progress (sim, é eu!) and the game is on to see how I can juggle all the musical projects I love so dearly! Added to the mix - I have just been informed I am to be inducted! Into Missoula, MT Jazz Hall of Fame, that is, meaning I will likely be taking a quick trip up there in late April. Suddenly I need room on the wall for plaques... who'd 'a' thunk it? Meanwhile, there is musical fun to be had:

Dear friends,

I have been remiss, compartmentalized, frazzled... and things are changing fast. So I am sending out a revised schedule for the weekend. You already had it all planned out? Aha!

Well... me too! Anyway, put some gas in your american car and drive around with me. There is music to be enjoyed! Big thanks to those who made it to Caffe Sole in Table Mesa last night! It was a really nice night for the Dexter Payne Quartet (with Bill Kopper, Dave Willey, Raoul Rossiter.) We played our Brazilian choro, samba, forro in a really congenial and human setting for a lively audience. Watch for us again on the same date next month, March 10.

International Blues Challenge

Just a short note to let everyone know that we, the Lionel Young Band, won the final round tonight of the IBC.

Eight bands performed for 20 minutes each in the amazing old Orpheum Theater at the end of Beale St. in Memphis, TN. Great bands played, the amazing harmonica player/designer Lee Oscar hung out back stage, and blues fans on 3 gilded levels cheered. Great crew and stage... and when they announced the winners... we were number 1!

Lionel Young, Kim Stone, Jay Forrest, Andre Mali, Ricardo Peña, Dexter Payne - Lionel selected and we all created a sound that worked, a team that likes playing together, and apparently the fun comes across, because we have had great response from Colorado to here in Memphis. It is very rewarding and a little humbling to be selected by judges, who knows who they are or what their taste.

So here we sit, late at night, laughing and a little giddy... and really tired... and very happy!

One week to Memphis!

Excitement is building and we are reaching the final round before heading out. This Sunday will be the big benefit for the three bands going to Memphis for the International Blues Challenge. A duo, Big Jim Adams and John Stilwagen, a youth band, Taylor Marvin, and the Lionel Young Band.

We have been in rehearsal and in the studio, and we are finishing up a new CD to take with us to Memphis. It is a great crew to work with, all very talented and with great spirit. We have had the help and encouragement (and great ears) Mark Derryberry, recording and mix engineer, one of the best in town.

We will leave a week from Saturday to play a show in St. Louis on the way to Memphis. Meanwhile, this Sunday is a big fundraiser at the Boulder Outlook Hotel - Blues & Greens, to help all three bands get to Memphis for the IBC. The day will kick off at 3pm and the benefit will go til about 7pm... we will have the last set. The regular blues jam follows at 7:30.
Come on down and give us a good send off!

The new year has begun full steam ahead, at least it feels that way. Thank you so much for your support in 2010, especially the last two nights with the Quartet! I still get a warm feeling thinking about it, like having your family all around you. That is what holidays are about, huh?

Neil Hirschowitz is an artist with a big vision. One facet is an idea we have been experimenting with. The short description is: I play, he paints. The Darkest Night (can't wait for Sat and Tues)

A magical time of year, when things change unexpectedly. No explanation... poof! Everything is different! A good time to pull in, renew - and even more important, to get out, connect, find our community, remember how to laugh. Friends and family are great for helping us to laugh at ourselves. Laughing together. Laughing so hard we can't remember - tears of grief? Tears of joy? Rage? What's so funny about that? About what? Laughter feels good.

What a treat to be able to share some exquisite music with you this season. Find your way over to the St Julien Hotel Saturday, Dec 25, 6-8pm (yes, Christmas Day!) and again Tuesday, Dec 28, 6:30-9:30pm to hear the Dexter Payne Quartet.

Musically, I am very excited about this group of musicians. Nothing new, you say? Something IS new - something happened in the group recently, a real spark. It's evolving from a foreign tradition into something with a life of it's own. Bill Kopper, Dave Willey and Raoul Rossiter have played Brazilian music long enough to have a really rooted and yet personal voice in it. Bill, Raoul and I all started playing the stuff in the mid 90s with Mitchell Long. And these are guys who do not sit still!

Further, things are shifting at the St. Julien. The new austerity has cut the budget for music, and there will be no music on Tuesday nights. In addition, there is a new weeknight policy emphasizing jazz, funk, blues, folk, Americana and soul. Management responds to the clientele who are vocal about what they want to hear. So......

Want to hear Brazilian choro and baiao at the St Julien again? You have two more nights to get it! Please rally, bring your friends and families, let's have a great time - come enjoy the Christmas season with sounds from Brazil. It has been a real pleasure to play there for you over the last four years and we appreciate your support. Time to celebrate!

December music is coming!

Yes, it has been a while - sorry! Some great things are happening, and exciting recordings are under way, so you will not be left out in the cold... but more on that later!

I have been busy, unfortunately not playing out in public so much. Occasionally, yes, but often it seems to be a last minute call. That is changing and I will give you a heads up now - Dexter Payne Quartet will be at the St. Julien Hotel on Christmas Night, SAT, Dec 25th (NOT Eve!) Mark your calendar and join us for some Christmas cheer, Brazilian style to round out your holiday. Ill be playing with Dave Willey, Bill Kopper, Raoul Rossiter. All we need is you!

Right now I want to let you know that this week, SAT Dec 4, I will be playing with Playback Theater West at the Dairy Center for the Arts. This is something I get to do all too rarely, and I love it! Their shows often sell out, and that is because they are amazing, taking stories from the audience (that's YOU) and turning them into improvise skits before your eyes... and I get to do the sound track! We never know what is coming next, and I mean that literally. It takes a very talented, present, connected, honest, compassionate group of people to pull off playback time and again - and Playback Theater West is all of that and more.

Sunday, I leave for a few days in Austin, TX to record with the great singer/writer, Ray Bonneville. A few of you will remember the Bluebirds, Ray Bonneville Blues Band and other permutations from days of yore! I will be back Thurs, Dec 9th in Boulder at Tonic with the very new Alchemy Project, a multimedia art concept - come check out the maiden flight!

Please keep in mind that I am gearing up for my third year directing the Naropa Afropop Ensemble, this year with collaboration of percussionist Scott Parker Mast. I am excited about what we have to offer together, and I strongly encourage anyone in the community who wants to participate to check with Naropa University and see if it fits. Class will meet every Monday afternoon for about 3 hours, roughly 14 classes Jan-May.

Dear faithful blog readers!

All saints. Days of the Dead. Trick or Treat. Nights are darker, winds are fiercer. Summer sun perfectly stored up in harvest.The spirit of fall is upon us!

I have been remiss - chalk it up to a busy schedule. Just finished a fine blues tour with Little Joe McLerran and Robbie Mack with dates in OK, IA, IL! Plus a Little Joe demo session with the addition of Andre Bohren. Yeah, you right! Andre is the New Orleans drummer of renoun, son of Spencer Bohren, currently with Johnny Sketch. A very cool quartet you will be hearing more from!

Meanwhile, back in Colorado... tonight (FRI) I have a couple of sets with Lionel Young Band at the Boulder Outlook Hotel (800 28th St). This is a really fine band - picked to represent our region at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis next Feb. Come and help the Blues Society raise expense money for our trip.

Keep in mind if you are of the Balkan (or any other) brass band persuasion, that Gora Gora Orkestar will hold forth FRI at the Laughing Goat (Pearl St) beginning at 9:30pm. I will be racing there to catch the last of the set!

SAT at 8pm the party moves to Denver with the Kailin Yong Peace Project at Swallow Hill . Music Assoc - Tuft Aud. (71 E Yale at B'way) the band is heading into the studio this month to make what should be an amazing album. Seeing is believing! Hearing, I mean. Music this week goes out to everyone who ever lost their home, even temporarily.

Today, Thursday, we resume the monthly celebration known as Bateria Alegria - a samba parade in Boulder at 7:30pm down Pearl St Mall from Broadway to the Laughing Goat, followed by singing and dancing with Ginga Grande at 8 or so. Let this be a rain dance for relief from the fires!

Saturday is 9-11, time for the third annual Kailin Yong Peace Concert at Broomfield Auditorium, 7:30 pm. Cannot say enough about this inspiring original music and the great players the amazing Kailin has drawn together: Bret Bowen, Carl Dixon, Jesse Manno, Jeff Jenkins. Yes, Ill be there too! Let's all take some time this day to imagine a world where peace is really possible. Come to Broomfield, and imagine with us!

Sunday is the final round of competition for the band to represent Colorado at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis next February. Outlook Hotel, Bldr, 3-6pm. I go on with the Lionel Young Band at 4:40pm.

A big thanks to those who came out to the St Julien Tues for the Dexter Payne Quartet, a small but very appreciative audience. We loved playing for you! Not to mention the exotic sighting later in the evening!

And a shout to the impressive Liza Oxnard and the great players in her band, Ryan Tracy, Dechen Hawk, Chris Engleman and Brian McRae, for a great couple of nights way over yonder in Telluride and Durango.

Joa Junquiera is a treasure trove of Brazilian musical culture & we have a great time playing together, all too rarely! Join us for an intimate house concert Friday...

Andre Mallinger is one of the best marimbists in these parts, and this is a collection of friends from a few different marimba bands (Tobatana, Zebras to name two). This performance celebrates the conclusion of Andre's Artist in Residence post at the library.

John Long is a very special bluesman who does not get around here as often as he used to. If you like the blues, or even if you dont, this will be a night of music you will remember.

Been having way too much fun lately! SF Bay Area gigs and Balkan Camp were a blast. So much so that it seems years have passed!

A very special night is upon us - I have been immersed in a Balkan Brass Workshop in Ft Collins presented by the non-profit "The World In Colorado" and led by Michele Simon and Peter Jaques as well as Diane Montgomery.

Michele is a vocalist with KITKA and vocalist/percussionist with Brass Menazerie in the Bay Area. Peter (clarinet,trumpet) is the musical director of Brass Menazerie, among other projects.

The workshop culminates Thursday evening with a dance party featuring:

I have been away from the keypad, taking in the spring - seems like summer now. A shifting of gears, a pause in the action as the focus changes. The garden is flourishing and as usual, I find great nourishment from what many look upon as "weeds". The earth is an amazing place to live, in every season, but especially hard to ignore it in spring... the more so now, when the balance of things is so tragically threatened by our mindless activities.

My "school year" was really wonderful. This year's Afropop Ensemble, as in '09, taught me so much. I would challenge my students as to who learned more from the experience. Someday, when I really know how to teach, they will learn as much as I do! It was a great bunch, a joy to work with, and they performed very well indeed. Some very talented, and all were enthusiastic and engaged. I was a student as well, taking Bill Douglas' Musicianship class, last time he will teach it as such. Lucky me! It was fun, challenging and inspiring and I learned ways of looking at (listening to) things that will be valuable for life. Friends have told me for years how much they gained studying with Bill - no exaggeration. I count myself as very fortunate.

Another move into the world of new music! Having upgraded my cyber-situation, when my dear and very creative friend, Scot Ray, invited me to collaborate on a long-distance recording project I was able to accept. As a result, I am on two tracks of his newest endeavour, Earth Circuit (clarinet on Human Tide and Earth as a Bridge.) The album is not being manufactured physically, but is available for download from iTunes and other outlets. In keeping with breaking new ground, I am repeating my pilgrimage of last summer to EEFC Balkan Music Camp outside Mendocino CA. What's new, you ask? Well, this year I am going first to San Francisco for a couple of low-key engagements with new friends. I will be playing with guitarist David Saxton in Berkeley and Sausalito on June 23 and 24 respectively. Please let your Bay Area friends know - invite them all to come and get acquainted!

Monday was a good night to listen to the radio, but if you missed it you can still download or stream the set at kgnu.org. I have played with Moussa for almost ten years, and Monday was was a fresh burst. Reminded me of first getting acquainted touring in CA playing places like Club Amnesia, Restaurant Baobab in San Francisco and up and down the coast. But this time it was Moussa's music - a bunch of original tunes. And the line up was great also - Glen Taylor and Eric Moon, and some young blood: Nate Ruchames, Max Friedman & Willow Duhamel, with Freddy Jean Baptist holding it down on drums. You will be seeing the Moussa Konate band around here in the near future, come check it out!

A school year comes to it's end. I had a great time with Naropa Afropop Ensemble - a really great bunch this year. They learned a lot (I think!) and sang and played like pros for the final concert Sunday night. They really lead themselves - I just helped them through the rough spots. And at the same time I was completely inspired and enlightened by taking a class with Bill Douglas. The legendary! I have heard about Bill's classes for so many years (from so many great musicians), it was a special treat to be there. Pushed me into places I don't normally go! Meanwhile, music is alive:

Peach blossom

Now I know why it is so cold - my peach tree is in full bloom, at least the part that didn't just mysteriously break off. Gorgeous time of year and it seems there is often a little cold snap just as the fruit trees burst out. Gardens are growing - it is really grand!

Meanwhile the music flows. I have been so busy I forgot to report: this year's Naropa Afropop Ensemble truly rocked the Goat 11 days ago! Someone came up at the end asking for our email list! Ad the management said "We would definitely have you back!" Way to go gang!!!

This week I am happy to be playing with Rene Marie at Dazzle Wed, but sad to say it is a "private" affair. We WILL be playing at the

Kailin Yong Peace Project increases in momentum and depth with each performance. Kailin is experimenting with more intimate groupings. Just back from a midwest tour with a trio, this group is five.

Afropop Ensemble is an 11 piece group who plays music from So Africa, Ghana & Mali. Featured with the ensemble will be percussionist Scott Parker Mast as well as Malian guitarist, Moussa Konate.

These are talented students and they have been working hard on their musical craft, learning and perfecting tunes for this performance. From the first day of class ten weeks ago, this group has worked together naturally, complimenting each others strengths and supporting everyone's musical process. They understand the joy of music. Last year the Ensemble got rave reviews backing Ghanaian singer/composer Kofi Mawuko at the Bao Bao Festival at the Boulder Theater.

The Ensemble performs music by Mawuko's and by Moussa Konate, guitarist from Mali. The Laughing Goat has transformed in a short time from a coffee house where folk musicians disturbed chess players with their guitars and mandolins – into a vibrant music venue where an 11 piece band can play a warmup set.

A Spring to Remember

I have just returned from a very moving gathering of old friends. Saturday was a sad and joyful day as we celebrated the life of Bruce Laxalt, poet, lawyer, glider pilot and bass player in a couple of bands I played with in California and Nevada in my early years. Bruce died March 19 after a 9 year battle with ALS. I joined David Horgan, Rob Saunders and Eli Dokson playing old favorites and new sounds for the funeral and the party which followed. It was great seeing friends, some of whom I have not been with for years. We laughed and cried.

Other news: I have a new clarinet! I have retired the instrument that I have played continuously since I was 14 and I am very excited... and enjoying an even older instrument! Come check it out!

So "What is forro", you ask. Or if you are really in the know- "Hey! You guys don't play forro!" well, as an addition to our rich diet of Choro music, traditional jazz of Brasil (which you can actually samba to) we are gradually adding some dance music native to the North-East of Brasil - "baiao" and "xote" are varieties of Forro, a range of music made popular by Luis Gonzaga, accordionist. To celebrate this exploration, we have the honor of a visit from Dave Willey, composer and accordion of Hamster Theatre, and of Veelah. Come early to catch this exciting sound!

Then Friday I am up in Nederland with Salem, the canvas for Todd Johnson's original music. We will be sure to be funkin it up, latin style, with a little jazzy hiphop thrown in. Whistlers is the focus of a happening night scene in Ned.

Can't get enough? Saturday night at the Operahouse in Aspen will be a real treat for swing dancers, complete with some hot exhibition jitterbuggers and lindyhoppers, it's the National Swing Band, led by legendary Pastor Mustard of Telluride Bluegrass fame. I first met the Reverand Pastor as Dan Sadowsky, fearless leader of the Ophelia Swing Band (his bandmates included the likes of Tim OBrien & Washboard Chaz - Check them out on youtube.) Mustard, long-standing MC at Telluride Bluegrass, will rip it up for the dancers with a hot line-up including yours truly and Katie Glassman, extraordinary fiddler.

Come on out and say HI at one of these events. We will have fun - and remember it's Mardi Gras/Carnaval! Denver folks who cannot make it to Aspen Saturday should consider the Carnaval events at Euphoria Cafe on Larimer with Ginga Grande & Bateria Alegria!

It is my great pleasure all too infrequently to play with Playback Theater West. This is definitely play - if you don't know Playback, you are missing out. A group of very present actors act out the story YOU tell them. I provide the soundtrack. Live entertainment at it's best! Playback is at the Dairy every month - I will have one more show with them this season.

My favorite Quartet is back at St Julien. All you folks who asked when - it's now! We will look for you! The best Brazilian choro, samba, bossa, forro.

Next week in Aspen, it's time for that caution to the wind Valentine date - Swing dance at the Wheeler Opera House! Dan Sadowsky, aka Pastor Mustard, is known to many for a lifetime of MC-ing Telluride Bluegrass. He is also known to some for the Ophelia Swing Band, a Boulder gem from the 70s which featured Dan with Tim OBrien, Washboard Chaz among other stellar players. Hot swing is an understatement for the National Swing Band with pearls from Cab Callaway, Louis Jordan and more.

Meanwhile, I just received news that the Little Joe McLerran CD, Believe Ill Make a Change, has topped the blues charts! Yes, Joe's album is number one on the Roots Music Report, one of the biggest around. I am really happy for Joe, who deserves every bit of success he gets, and proud to be on his album, playing harp and horns, too.

The members of Beco combine instrumental virtuosity on violin, clarinet, saxophone, acoustic guitars, cavaquinho (Brazilian Ukulele) with an authentic infectious singing style and the irresistible rhythm of traditional batucada (percussion ensemble): surdo (the largest drum), pandeiro (Brazilian tambourine), tamborim (the smallest drum), ganzá (shaker), tan-tan (mid-size hand drum), reco-reco (scraper), and repinique (the lead drum in the batucada/samba-school style). Beco’s songs present a high level of poetry and vibrant Afro-Brazilian rhythms, portrayed by traditional percussion instruments, which energize listeners from a diversity of communities.

We are very fortunate to this kind of music available to us in Boulder. I have been told that even in many Brazilian towns and cities you cannot easily find music of this quality and tradition.

If you have not been to a house concert here, they're a lot of fun and you are very welcome to join us. We start with a potluck - bring what you like or nothing at all. One of the lovely things about these concerts is meeting new people as well as seeing friends again.
We invite musicians who are local and that we love to listen to ourselves. Boulder's pool of musical talent is world class, but there is a lack of opportunity to hear them in intimate, acoustically friendly venues. We try to do our part to rectify this situation.

We are fascinated by musicians with something unique and challenging to present, often with musical influences outside the norm--whether geographically, culturally, or stylistically. We often hear from the musicians that this is an inspiring setting.

January is always new

Life never fails to surprise, just when I think I know the pattern it skips a stitch, or reverses completely! Had a lovely Christmas and holiday season - in spite of myself! Focused on the gates of doom closing around us all, I was repeatedly surprised by the ringing phone and found myself with opportunities to present a variety of music to all kinds of people. Isn't that what a musician lives for? (Say amen somebody!) From the heart of Aurora to Snowmass, it was good, and now it's over. Actually, several new gigs hold promise for repeating!

January is a whole new picture. Several recording projects to work on: composer Sebastian Albu, songwriter George Inai, a new project with my very special friend, Michael Stanwood. A previous project with Dawn and David Kimble is finally coming to fruit with a new CD. Breaking new ground for this young fella is a new collaboration with another good friend, the very talented Scot Ray (Gut Puppet, Active Vapor Recovery). Doing this at home, surrounding myself with gear I barely understand and climbing the steep part of the learning curve - adding my musings and reflections to a couple of Scot's musical journeys. Ask me about it in a week or two!

Meanwhile school is in, literally. Monday was the first day of classes at Naropa University, where I am once again the fearless Director of the Afropop Ensemble. No way to know what is possible til the first day - looks like an enthusiastic crew, and with the addition of at least one "continuing ed" community member, it promises to be a rewarding adventure. Surprise of surprises, dream of dreams: I am hoping to take a semester of Musicianship from the amazing Bill Douglas. Yes, it's back to school with lots to learn!

Ringing In 2010

Christmas Eve was a really lovely scene: a candle lighting ceremony ended a the service which Michael Stanwood and I have played for several years. Then I was off to the mountains with Salem for dates in Vail and Steamboat.

Closing a year of learning, not always easy, of fresh perspectives, some tougher than others. Covered a lot of "ground" ... and our spiral trajectory through space and time shows no sign of slowing! Thanks to all of you for your interest, your ears, your hearts. You are a very important inspiration in my life - I am sending a big hug of gratitude to each of you. All relatives? For the lucky ones, anyway!

Lucky is all in how you look at it. As a friend pointed out, now when the sun shines and the temperature gets up to 32º F we feel tropical, very lucky indeed. A few days ago, 32º was a miserable prospect, sunshine or not.

I am lucky, indeed! Another week with a bunch of really great musicians!

Why wait til November? Never wait to give thanks! Of course, there are those things that slip by - we forget. It's always a good time to remember! Have I told you lately how great it feels when you come out to hear live music? I know there are choices, lots of good ones, so when I see your face I am honored. Plus, it's great to see you! More than anything, I feel a lot of gratitude for the great people in my life.

Some are really talented musicians, and I am blessed by the tremendous variety of great players I get to work with - this weekend is no exception. Friday and Saturday with wonderful W. African guitarist and singer, Moussa Konate, who is starting to appear more on the local scene again. last we week we had a real spur of the moment live radio duet (archived on www.kgnu.org Fri Morning Sound Alternative with Meredith Carson) In the last year or so he has done a bit of traveling with blues wizard, Corey Harris, and this summer he was teaching and performing at the Centrum Blues Festival at Port Townsend. We play in two contrasting settings - Fri with a band and Saturday as a duo. Sunday continues the duo theme - with Lionel Young. Have you heard Lionel lately? His musical persona, always amazing, has grown significantly with the experience his accolades have earned him.

All this in Aurora, Arvada, Denver - can you beat that! (See below.) And if you missed out in the eating department this week, you can check out some of the best Ethiopian, pizza and barbeque, respectively. It's the holidays, live a little. Sometimes we need to thank ourselves, too...

Daylight Losing Time

Is it Daylight Losing Time - because we gained an hour? After a week or so we should all be adjusted, right? I wonder if we could save that hour and just use it little bits at a time, whenever we are late for something important.

I felt like I got some of that time back on Sunday, playing with Joao Junquiera at the Blending Cellar. It is wonderful to have Joao back in town, and it is possible we will be there again this Sun... just don't know yet! And time definitely stood still on Thurs night, too, as Bateria Alegria led the samba parade down the Mall to the Laughing Goat. For a few minutes it was summer again. Way to dance, people!

I have promised not to be late with this message... although sometimes I wait because things seem to come together at the last minute. Then again, often it's just that old Daylight Losing Time getting the best of me, although come to think of it, the same thing happens during Daylight Savings. I actually belong to a Time Bank, but that doesn't seem to help. Meanwhile, there is music worth mentioning–

Shifting Sands... and Brazil Wed @ St Julien

I am grateful and so happy each time I get involved in a creative project with relevance. Thurs night's Shifting Sands was one of those times. The performers were all inspired and touched by the subject and the setting. And I think everyone else was, too.

Creator of the show, Scott Kinnamon , is a delightful and intensely creative individual, responsible for the series "The Lab at Belmont" which combined creative media and brought together artists in unusual and inspired contexts. Thursday night, in Shifting Sands, Scott set the mood, by performing the musical opening with us, then led the way in a series of 9 readers who gave selections from the book. They ranged from CO Speaker of the House Terrance Carroll to three high school students from Denver School of the Arts.

Eric Moon and I created musical interludes and a sonic backdrop for the readings. Working with Eric is a joy. He always brings a high level of integrity and sensitivity to creating in the moment.

Looking ahead, Wed the 28th of October is Brazil night @ St Julien, 6:30-9:00.

Fall is "in the air". That's putting it mildly! Suddenly cold weather... and no work this week. OMG! What will I do with myself? Actually there is PLENTY of work to do - don't kid yourself. The fact is, I had to turn down a really great job opportunity to make room for a family trip - a pilgrimage of a sort - leaving tomorrow with my Dad and sister for a trip to his hometown in Missouri. Next week is another story. Nuff said.

Everything you need to feel the warmth of the southern hemisphere as the weather outside celebrates our turn towards fall. Come samba by the fireplace! And pretend for a moment that we get to hear these sounds every week.

Imagine that - if we will it, it can be so!

Check this out - in addition to their amazing recreation of Brazilian choro (traditional jazz) from the early to mid 20th century, the quartet is mining the rich trove of northeast Brazil - "musica nordestina" to bring you baiao and other rhythms for dancing "foro". Say you cant samba? No worries - Foro translates literally to "for all". Consider it Cajun music from Brazil - and get out and shake a leg! Every time you hear this group we will be adding more infectious, irresistible musica nordestina !

Meanwhile there is a remarkable event taking place for the the second and final week in Denver Oct 7-10 at Crossroads Theater. The amazing singer Rene Marie is staging her first theatrical endeavour, the one-woman show "Slut Energy". I mention this not just because she is my friend, not just because I have had the honor of performing with her, but because Rene is one of the most evocative performers alive, let alone singers. She communicates with her audience at a level that is very rare. I will be there – and I encourage you to treat yourself to an evening that will be both memorable and moving. And probably inspiring!

Today is a day to do something special, something with awareness and gratitude and joy. That is our strongest, our only, way out of where we have gotten. I have noticed how music seems to come the US consistently from places in the world which are experiencing agony and devastation - people in pain have an urgent need, and maybe increased ability, to express joy. Music from the Balkans came into my awareness just as that part of the world was being ravaged.

I am excited for the opportunity to present this music twice in a month. It has found a special place in my ear and my heart, now working its way to my feet! Something about it seems to come from a place out of time.

Its Meg York & Veelah with a slightly different lineup. If you havent been to JUC in Golden, you owe it to yourself to experience the great acoustics and ambience there. Join us for a mesmerizing evening of music from Eastern Europe and Roma traditions. Driving Balkan rhythms underscore Romani-style soaring solos and poignant, timeless folk melodies. Writing from Tulsa, OK - here to record with dear friends Little Joe McLerran and his dad, Robbie Mac. Joe won the International Blues Challenge solo/duo competition in Memphis this year. Since then he has been busy playing blues festivals from Portland, OR to Milan, Italy (and a brief tour in CO).

When they invited me to be part of the next CD, I hopped on the first freight train to Tulsa. Things went great in the studio (Mi Casa Recording, the domain of Mike Peace) ... and then the venue we were booked to play at closed earlier this week.

But the stars are shining on us - we will play tonight (FRI) at the Tulsa VFW Uptown Lounge to warm up the grill for tomorrow's Barbeque Cook-Off. Come on down, y'all! The VFW has their own serious barbeque and Joe and the band have been working hard in the studio - it's high time we got down with the folks! Music will be cookin about 7pm...

Thanks to everyone who appeared last week - what a treat to see familiar faces!

There is more fun afoot... starting tonight! Michael Stanwood is an amazing individual, and long time friend. (See www.michaelstanwood.com) Tonight in a rare appearance of Yeahbut Shoehead we will play one of the songs that introduced Michael to me in the recording studio of Charles Sautel a few years back. This quartet, which also includes Tom Blomster (Mercury Ensemble and much more) and Ron Bland (consumate bassist and educator) does not play near enough, but tonight we will be having a blast in Estes Park!

On Thursday at the St Julien Hotel the Dexter Payne Quartet continues its series of Brazilian explorations. Bill Kopper, Francisco Marques and Raoul Rossiter join me in this immersion in the lovely sounds of Brasil.

Sunday another rare treat: George Inai plays a set at So Broadway Christian Church as part of the Denver Underground Showcase, 4 days of dozens of bands in venues all over town. George repeatedly amazes me with the depth and breadth of his writing, and he assembles a great crew, including Eric Moon, Mike Fitzmaurice, Derek Bannach, Terry Dane.

Back to the Roots with the Next Generation

I so love the Brazilian music I am immersed in, but it is funny how the newest thing brings you back around to the old home place. This week finds me in the thick of that delicious mixture. Freshly home from a phenomenal week at EEFC Balkan Music Camp, an experience that words do poor service to describe, and after an inspired set with Bateria Alegria at Saturdays Tibetan celebration, I have the good fortune to visit the new and the old in one lively week of playing blues with Joe McLerran, this years winner in the solo catagory in Memphis TN at the International Blues Challenge.

And with Joe is Richard Whetstone, originally from the Electric Prunes, and Rob McLerran, who played bass with Colorado's own top forty surf band, the Astronauts. Yes, that IS Joe's dad. Some Boulder music fans will remember the Cheaters, the Beagle Boys, Gone Johnson , the Nairobi Trio with BarBQBob and Washboard Chaz and many more. I myself danced in high school to both of these illustrious gentlemen in the Astronauts and Mayfield Spinning Wheel.

But enough of "back in the day". Joe grew up around a lot of music, - seems he took a cue from BarBQ (aka Don DeBacker) and blues legend Johnny Long for his point of departure. Now he is back with high honors at the ripe old age of 26. In fact, his birthday will be celebrated at the Outlook Hotel on Thursday. And joining him Friday at the Gold Hill Inn is Lionel Young, last years winner! If you missed my dates with Joe last week at Oskar's and the Soiled Dove, don't lose out completely, come and enjoy the old style blues:

My apology to you , the wonderful folks who came to listen on Wed, June 17. Believe me, had I known, I never would have invited you to come out, much less solicited your support! I hope that when I invite you to giggle with me in the future, that you will respond again with the same enthusiasm.

I enjoy making music for almost any audience but it is especially wonderful to play for friends, old and new, who have an interest in what we are trying to share. From the moment you walk in, we begin that magic exchange that makes each one of us more than we can ever be alone. I promise every effort to be clear and timely in my communication, and I hope the venue(s) will assist in that effort. You are what makes this valid and possible, and I am honored by your support. St Julien Hotel, Wed June 17, 6:30pm. This will be the last chance to hear Dexter’s mix of Brazilian music (next show is on Wed, July 8th, also at the St Julien). So put it on the calendar, drop in and say HI!

We are negotiating for a more dates at the St Julien, so any vote of confidence is a great help, be it a call to the hotel asking for more of the Dexter Payne Quartet or just coming in to listen to the choros, dance to the samba and forro.

Meanwhile, I can no longer contain my excitement – I feel like a kid!

I have been offered a scholarship to attend Balkan Music Camp this summer in CA near Mendocino (June 27 – July 4). Needless to say, Im accepting! So, the last week of June… I head for Camp.
Makes me feel like a kid (I never actually went to a music camp as a youngster!!!) - a glorious week of gypsy music in the redwoods. No phone, no internet for a week. Anticipation is building!!!

The AfroPop Ensemble gave a great performance last week at the Naropa University Music Department Final Concert. I was very proud - the end to a great first year! Many thanks are due: to Janet Feder and Emily Harrison, the heart and soul of the Music dept. To Adje Abankwa and Kofi Mawuko of the Bao Bao Festival, who gave meaning to the whole project, as well as lots of sweat and love.

How did life get so busy? In spite of the doom and gloom, weird fears and what not... here goes another busy weekend! It began tonight (sorry folks, I was remiss) with the first ever parade of the newly named Bateria Alegria. Whats that? Picture 30 people strolling the Boulder Mall at 7:30pm on a warm (spring?) evening ... with Brazilian drums, bells and a whistle. You got it - just like carnaval - loud, and fun! We were all grinning from ear to ear and by the looks on faces of young and old, Alegria is a pretty good name to descibe what goes on. I promise to tell in advance next time. Then I raced to Denver to play with Joao Junquiera and Amy (2/3 of Samba Song) at Enoteca in LoDo. Joao's last gig in the states till next fall. OK, enough of the stuff you cant do anything about...

Its a very exciting time for me, the culmination of this semester's Naropa University Afropop Ensemble: 16 students who have really exceeded everyones expectations including their own. This group backed singer/composer Kofi Mawuko from Ghana in the 6th Annual Bao Bao Festival at Boulder Theater. And now...

Spring Music

More or less recovered from the Bao Bao Festival - I must say I was touched deeply by the effort and performance of "my" class, Afropop Ensemble, who in 6 weeks transformed themselves from a bunch of Naropa University undergrads, mostly freshmen, into a high energy performing unit at Boulder Theater for a standing room only Bao Bao Fest. The Bao Bao, it has been said, was better than ever, and the Ensemble rose to the occasion and really topped off the evening. I stand in awe of their performance and offer my gratitude for their sacrifice and supreme effort.

Bao Bao in all its joy was followed by Samba Night at the Fox Theater: Ginga, Capoeira and Samba Dende (with a 3-piece horn section).

Celebration of spring continues with Playback Theater West on FRI, Apr 3 8pm at the Dairy Center: improvisational theater at its best. I am the instant music score – and YOU write the screenplay, so come on down. Playback is a well loved Boulder staple, and I totally enjoy being in the rotation with these talented spirits.

Be sure to catch Beco Do Choro Quartet SAT Apr 4th, 8 pm in an intimate house concert of Brazilian music in South Boulder. Once again you have a part in the creation - potluck at 6 and then samba and foro the night away to the authentic sounds of Brazil, traditional and original. Its a new era! Not an arrival ... we have some ground to cover. Wherever we are headed its sure going fast, the steep part of the curve. So while we are bivouacked here on this face, stuck between a rock and thin air... might as well take a Saturday night off and enjoy some great music. Sadly we have to choose, luckily we have choices.

How about an evening in Brazil? January heat in Recife, Rio, São Paulo. Beaches packed, escolas de samba in full swing, carnaval is almost here. Turn down the alley and suddenly its Dan and Dianne's living room. Smiling faces, good food, friends old and new – a house concert with Beco Do Choro!

João Junqueira is stirring the pot, turning a bossa to a baião, a samba to a frevo. Francisco Marques is turning up the heat, seven string melodies, rocking the rhythm on pandeiro and cavaquinho. Here comes Dexter Payne's clarinet, everyone is up - dancing, singing. Dont miss out!

How excited can you get about a 24 year old recording? Pretty excited, as I see peoples faces light up and hear exclamations over the phone... this is fun! Yes, there are people who still remember and get nostalgic about the good old days - reminiscing about Judy and others who are no longer with us. Funny how a recording brings someone back to life!

But even more fun are folks who cant really tell you what they were doing in 1983. Watching their eyes get big and their jaws drop ... then comes a big smile, "Wow! That rocks!"

Judy Roderick & the Forbears

When I’m Gone

When blues musicologist Dick Waterman first saw Judy Roderick take the stage of Cambridge’s Club 47 back in the 1960s, he expected to hear something prim and preppy — like maybe “Greensleeves” — from this petite musician, dressed in plaid skirt and sensible shoes.

What Waterman heard was an inspired blues belter, fluent in the form and so much more.

Roderick, who died in 1992 just shy of 50, left behind a modest but remarkable body of work, born of the ‘60s folk revival and enriched by a contagious respect for myriad styles, from vintage jazz to country blues. Her commercial high-water mark was “Woman Blue,” released by Vanguard Records in 1965 and still available in retail racks to this day.”

Her extended family, including notable musicians scattered hither and yon, fans of long memory and kin at Sardinia’s Olmsted Camp, continue to fly the flag for Roderick, who could perform in any company, bar none, and quite admirably.

Longtime collaborator Dexter Payne, witness to this unique talent, has reassembled and re-released “When I’m Gone,” a 1982 recording of Roderick and her incredibly tight band, the Forbears: Washboard Chaz Leary, Don DeBacker, Tim Martin and Payne. The recording, which includes several guest slots by Mac Rebennack, aka Dr. John, is a rollicking reward from the git-go to git-gone.

Extended-play honors go to the title cut, “When I’m Gone,” an achingly clever, slyly hip musing on being here — and not being here. Roderick soulfully surfs the crest of a strong horn section and Dr. John keyboards on three other barn-burners: “Surprises,” “Denver to Dallas” and Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup’s “Shout Sister Shout.” She turns on the slow heat in a slinky and sultry take on Jimmie Lunceford’s “Dream of You.” The disc ends in a folkie mode, mining a late 1970s track of “Floods of South Dakota,” back in the days when Roderick and Payne kept company with a group called The Big Sky Mudflaps.

“When I’m Gone” is a clear view of an amazing artist who deserves much more recognition. It is fresh and vital.

Starting mellow, as far as gigs go...

A sad note - Bill Ashford, Judy's husband and collaborator 1967-75, died as the CD was being released. No one looked for its release more enthusiastically that the former underground free form dj, co-writer on many songs of Judy's.

These recipes for success are truly inspiring! The book also has great photos throughout, and 37 delicious, unique recipes, many of which have been handed down through families for generations. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Adopted and proclaimed by General Assembly resolution 217 A (III) of 10 December 1948

On December 10, 1948 the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights the full text of which appears in the following pages. Following this historic act the Assembly called upon all Member countries to publicize the text of the Declaration and "to cause it to be disseminated, displayed, read and expounded principally in schools and other educational institutions, without distinction based on the political status of countries or territories."

PREAMBLE

Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,

Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people,

Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law,

Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between nations,

Whereas the peoples of the United Nations have in the Charter reaffirmed their faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person and in the equal rights of men and women and have determined to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,

Now, Therefore THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY proclaims THIS UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction.

Article 1.

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

Article 2.

Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Furthermore, no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, whether it be independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty.

Article 3.

Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.

Article 4.

No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.

Article 5.

No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

Article 6.

Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person before the law.

Article 7.

All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in violation of this Declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination.

Article 8.

Everyone has the right to an effective remedy by the competent national tribunals for acts violating the fundamental rights granted him by the constitution or by law.

Article 9.

No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile.

Article 10.

Everyone is entitled in full equality to a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal, in the determination of his rights and obligations and of any criminal charge against him.

Article 11.

(1) Everyone charged with a penal offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law in a public trial at which he has had all the guarantees necessary for his defence.

(2) No one shall be held guilty of any penal offence on account of any act or omission which did not constitute a penal offence, under national or international law, at the time when it was committed. Nor shall a heavier penalty be imposed than the one that was applicable at the time the penal offence was committed.

Article 12.

No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks.

Article 13.

(1) Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state.

(2) Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country.

Article 14.

(1) Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution.

(2) This right may not be invoked in the case of prosecutions genuinely arising from non-political crimes or from acts contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations.

Article 15.

(1) Everyone has the right to a nationality.

(2) No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his nationality nor denied the right to change his nationality.

Article 16.

(1) Men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry and to found a family. They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at its dissolution.

(2) Marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent of the intending spouses.

(3) The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and the State.

Article 17.

(1) Everyone has the right to own property alone as well as in association with others.

(2) No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his property.

Article 18.

Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.

Article 19.

Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

Article 20.

(1) Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association.

(2) No one may be compelled to belong to an association.

Article 21.

(1) Everyone has the right to take part in the government of his country, directly or through freely chosen representatives.

(2) Everyone has the right of equal access to public service in his country.

(3) The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures.

Article 22.

Everyone, as a member of society, has the right to social security and is entitled to realization, through national effort and international co-operation and in accordance with the organization and resources of each State, of the economic, social and cultural rights indispensable for his dignity and the free development of his personality.

Article 23.

(1) Everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favourable conditions of work and to protection against unemployment.

(2) Everyone, without any discrimination, has the right to equal pay for equal work.

(3) Everyone who works has the right to just and favourable remuneration ensuring for himself and his family an existence worthy of human dignity, and supplemented, if necessary, by other means of social protection.

(4) Everyone has the right to form and to join trade unions for the protection of his interests.

Article 24.

Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable limitation of working hours and periodic holidays with pay.

Article 25.

(1) Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.

(2) Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance. All children, whether born in or out of wedlock, shall enjoy the same social protection.

Article 26.

(1) Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit.

(2) Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups, and shall further the activities of the United Nations for the maintenance of peace.

(3) Parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children.

Article 27.

(1) Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits.

(2) Everyone has the right to the protection of the moral and material interests resulting from any scientific, literary or artistic production of which he is the author.

Article 28.

Everyone is entitled to a social and international order in which the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration can be fully realized.

Article 29.

(1) Everyone has duties to the community in which alone the free and full development of his personality is possible.

(2) In the exercise of his rights and freedoms, everyone shall be subject only to such limitations as are determined by law solely for the purpose of securing due recognition and respect for the rights and freedoms of others and of meeting the just requirements of morality, public order and the general welfare in a democratic society.

I dont usually talk about studio work - so many things can happen between a session and a CD - and its really someone elses business, Im just a hired hand. But rules are for breaking - right? I had the best time yesterday working with Brian Mullens and Andy McEwen. It was partly the inspired music, part inspiring setting, part great company, but at the bottom of it all... I LOVE playing the bass clarinet! No pun intended.

As long as Im out on a limb, might as well bounce a little: It doesnt really matter who you support or what you believe in, (or dont, as the case may be) prayer and voting have been proven conclusively to be very effective. I suggest we all need to do both in the next six days!!!

This is an amazing group of very talented people, who I have the privilege of playing with a few times each year. Playback is a theater form in which the actors "playback" or improvise (and embellish!) real life stories from the audience. They are SO good, and I get to provide an on-the-spot soundtrack. Improvised music and sound effects, high art! Definitely high fun - the hilarity and pathos they evoke is astounding!

Kailin Yong Solo Debut Daniel Pearl World Music Days Concert - They were two very special nights! "Music has the power to reach across boundaries, spreading joy and understanding like nothing else can." South, NYC, to celebrate the life of Richard Wendell Cordtz. What a night, rich with performance by many friends, heartfelt words, perfect silence - and complete with rare video of Wendell performing as well as a memorable bagpipe performance - of Diamonds Are a Girls Best Friend!

2008 Started with a wild ski tour - playing outdoors for the X Games in Aspen and warming up for De La Soul. Continuing with Jazzoula Fest in Missoula, MT and total inspiration by Buddy DeFranco, Phil Woods, Bucky Pizzarelli, John Allred.

I will continue to send out emails to friends on my list, but this seems like a much better way to be letting people know where to find me on a given day/night. Heres hoping it works that way!
